Crouch Family Holds Reunion

The fifth annual reunion of the Crouch Family was held Sunday at Manners Park. Picnic dinner was served at noon.

The afternoon was spent with a short entertainment, including readings, and several quartette, by the Crouch Brothers from Decatur. Officers for the following year are President, Mrs. Lou Woolsey; vice-President, Mrs. Hugh Breckenridge; Sec-Treas, J. B. Crouch; Chairman, R. J. Crouch.

Mrs. Helen Crouch was the oldest member present and the youngest was the six weeks old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Haldeen Calvert.

Those present were:

Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Crouch and son Stanley Reid, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Crouch, Mr. and Mrs. V. Crouch and children, Eugene, Helen, Margaret, and Jimmie; Mr. and Mrs.  J. B. Crouch and sons Dewey and Opal; Mrs Helen Crouch, all from Decatur, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Crouch; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Bivins and children, Mrs. Amy Ray and daughter Edora; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hilton; Mr. and Mrs. Haldeen Calvert, all from Finley, Ill.

Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Walker and children Virginia and Harlan, Mattoon, Ill.; Miss Estella Breckenridge, Davenport, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Breckenridge and family, Roy, Lillie, Elizabeth, and Edith; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Woolsey, Mr. amd Mrs. Ralph Funderburke and son Halden, all from Pawnee; Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Hall and children Clarence and Ella May from Morrisonville; Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Breckenridge and children, Lloyd and Gladys, Taylorville. The reunion will be held next year at Nelson Park, Decatur, the second Sunday in September.

This clipping is courtesy of Sally Thomas. No date provided. Helen Crouch was still alive in 1930. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Crouch is James Barbour Crouch and the son referred to as Opal is Richard Oral Crouch. Mr. and Mrs. V. Crouch would have been Lester Van.

Manners Park: A 62 acre tract is just four blocks south of the Taylorville (Ill) Square. The park has one seven-acre lake that offers great fishing, waterfowl, and natural areas. There are also 5 playground areas for youngsters, a large Chautauqua building that was placed on the National Historic Site list in 1988, and one other large shelter ö perfect for family reunions or large picnics. Four baseball fields (one lighted), basketball and tennis courts, one outdoor Olympic size swimming pool, and a community building are all in Manners Park. The Park District Administration Building is also located here.

At the bottom of this page. I have listed the names of the persons at this gathering and have given some detail concerning their relationship to the Crouch family. I am not a genealogist. I have used the work of Myra Crouch Dickson who worked for over 60 years to accumulate this information. Her daughter Julie Meredith has incorporated this in a web site.

http://www.meredithroots.org

If you are interested in genealogy concerning the David Crouch line this site is a must. For all that I came up short. I can't identify Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hiton (Hilton). And I cannot date the event accurately. It is certainly no earlier than 1931 and most likely 1933. Haldeen Calvert had a daughter, Barbara Ann, born July 27, 1933, at Pana, Christian, Illinois. But there was an earlier child and a couple later.

Finally if you spot errors or can add information please contact me.

Roy Breckenridge, Hugh Breckenridge, Stanly Crouch, Armstrong D. Young, Jonathan Crouch, Richard Breckenridge, Lester "Van" Crouch, Richard Breckenridge The child in front of Roy and Hugh is Hugh's son, Thomas Lloyd Breckenridge.

I've listed the persons named in the article in the order they were named. I've attempted with considerable success to relate them to the Crouch family. The source of much of this material is Julie Meredith's family web site - Meredithroots. http://www.meredithroots.org  It has a searchable database that made much of this pretty easy.

Keep in mind that we get our Breckenridge relatives from two sources: David & Elizabeth Cassity Crouch had a daughter named Mary "Polly" Crouch.  Polly was born about 1786 - 1789 in Wythe Co. Virginia and died about 1852 - 1855 in Kentucky.  Polly married George Washington Breckenridge on March 19, 1806 in Bourbon County, Kentucky.  George and Polly had nine children.  One of their children (Absalom Wallace Breckenridge) is the father of Richard Breckenridge who married Martha Jane Crouch on May 19, 1885 in Willisburg, KY.  Sally Thomas
