The Shapley School was
located a half mile south of Duval. Though Mary was able to identify some of
the students as she lived in the area, the pictures came into our possession
due to the fact that Roxa Beamer Crouch, Palmer's wife was the teacher. The
school was named after the Shapley family. While Harlow Shapley was a world
famous astronomer, the rest of the family stayed in the Duval area. Sister
Belle taught at North Star School and Harlow's twin brother maintained the
family farm. In a bizarre irony father Willis Shapley was struck by
lightening and killed one year before the same fate visited Blalock Crouch a
few miles down the road.
Top is teacher Roxa
Beamer Crouch and students in the 1942-1943 school year. Mary identifies the
boy holding the slate as Boy Lee Davis and the second boy from the right as
Henry Wald Buesser. The picture to the right shows the class of 1943-1944.
The boy in front of the teacher is Boy Lee Davis. The boy to the left of the
teacher is Henry Wald Buesser, the girl holding the slate is Bonnie Davis,
and the boy in the front row wearing the sweater is Kent Howery.
