Since I was putting up
Barton County Mo., school pictures it occurred to me that this picture
certainly should have its own page. My Aunt Mildred
Crouch Rehklau tells me that "the Glendale School where I taught was in
Barton County Missouri, but my memory doesn't give me a township. It was
west of the North Star School. At the time I taught there, seemed like it
was some distance. Going back in later years - it didn't seem very far. "
It turns out she wasn't the first Crouch to teach at
the school. See Carl
Crouch's Personal History - "There were no High Schools there, so after I graduated from
the eighth grade, taking such subjects as Algebra, Ancient History and
Literature which were beyond the eighth grade. I went to Lamar, Mo. to take
the Teachers examination. I passed and received a third grade certificate
which entitled me to teach in the rural schools. I had never intended to be
a school teacher, but my parents prevailed upon me to apply for a school. I
applied for the Glendale School about four miles northwest of Nashville, and
my application was accepted, I started teaching there at the age of sixteen.
The following year I taught at the Prairie School about four miles southeast
of Nashville, the next year at a rural school about ten miles east of
Nashville, the name of which I don't remember."
Wouldn't that be a great photo with sixteen year old Carl and his students?
Teacher Mildred Crouch (Rehklau)
I don't have the names of the students yet. I'm
hopeful that Mildred will give me some help there. The chalk board says
Glendale School 1942-43. This would have been the last time my aunt taught
there. She was living in Cape Girardeau when I was born in July of 1943.

entrusted to me promptly.
